Basque Contemporary Artist and Printmaker

Born in San Sebastián / Donostia in 1964, Marta Marugán studied Fine Arts at Universidad BBAA San Jordi in Barcelona and at the UPV/EHU University in Bilbao. She specialized in engraving, receiving her degree in 1988.
In 1990, she was awarded a specialization scholarship in color intaglio at the "Il Bisonte" workshop in Florence, where she earned the Italian degree in intaglio engraving. In 1991, she received a research grant in lithography and offset printing from the Menéndez Pelayo University in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Marta Marugán lived in Paris from 1992 to 2002, where she worked in her studio and exhibited her works in several prominent galleries. Her solo exhibitions include "Get Funk and the 25th Problem" at Atelier Talaeff in 1993 and "Secret Water" at Galerie Docteur Karcher in 1995. She also participated in collective exhibitions, such as the Cervantes Institute in 1998, the “Mois de l'Estampe” at The Cordonnerie in 2001, and the Paris Salon de Montrouge – Nouveaux Créateurs in 2003. During her Parisian years, she also collaborated with Michael Woolworth’s workshops and participated in international art fairs like Art Basel in 2000 and the ARCO Madrid fair in 2004.
Throughout her career, Marugán has gained both national and international recognition. She has exhibited her paintings and engraving works in cities like Paris, Rome, Naples, Milan, Basel, Porto, and Salvador in Brazil, as well as in Seattle, USA. Her extensive exhibition history includes numerous solo and collective exhibitions in Catalonia, and she has had an important presence in her home province, showcasing her work in galleries and institutions in Irun, Fuenterrabía, Zarautz, and San Sebastián.
In 2005, she took calligraphic drawing courses with Xia Hang in Beijing. In 2006, she earned a CAP in Plastic Arts and from 2010 to 2011, she completed a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts at San Jordi University in Barcelona. Today, she lives and works in Barcelona, where she continues to develop her practice in painting and engraving at her studio. Additionally, she teaches at The Industrial One and the Massana School in Barcelona, where she leads the “Drawing to See” program.
