Gabriela Muñagorri

Gabriela Muñagorri Mendiola is an artist and researcher, lives in Donostia-San Sebastián and holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the UPV/EHU (2025). Her doctoral thesis, “The Performativity of Fashion Dress,” proposes an imaginary dialogue between Martin Margiela and Roland Barthes to explore dress as a performative object within the historical context of Maison Martin Margiela (1988-1997). Her academic career began at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV/EHU, where she specialized in Sculpture and took the PhD program Practice and Limit of Sculpture (1997-1999).
Her work has been institutionally recognized and is part of collections such as the Artium Museoa (through the Shared Collection program of the Basque Government) and private collections such as that of the SALTO company. She has been resident artist at Arteleku and Hangar (Barcelona), and has participated in exhibitions at MACBA, Ferran Cano galleries (Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca), as well as in international festivals. It also maintains a close collaboration with Ekain Gallery since 2012, participating in various group exhibitions and presenting two solo exhibitions in 2017 and between 2023 and 2024. During her stay in Barcelona (2001-2009), she began her link with fashion through teaching at the Felicidad Duce School of Design and Fashion (now LCI).
Since 2009, now settled in Donostia, she has focused her research on fashion clothing, collaborating with institutions such as Arteleku and the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum. Since 2016, she combines her artistic and academic practice with the design of patterns and accessories under her own brand. She has presented her research at international congresses (Rome, Getaria) and published articles in specialized books such as La Forza della moda (2019) and Fashion through History (2017), consolidating her presence at the crossroads between art, fashion and critical theory.
