Basque Expressionist and Materialist Painter

Juan Luis Goenaga is a prominent Basque painter known for his distinctive blend of expressionism and materialism. HHis artistic career began in 1971 with his first group exhibition in Paris, followed by solo shows in Durango (1973), San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián, and other notable Basque galleries.

His individual exhibitions include major venues such as the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (1978), three solo shows at the San Telmo Museum (1979, 1981, 1986), Windsor Gallery in Bilbao (1981, 1984, 1990), and international exhibitions in Paris (1985), New York (1987), and Bayonne (1999).

Goenaga’s work has also been featured in numerous collective exhibitions, including Prague (1978), Pontevedra (1983), Cologne (1984), and an itinerant exhibition across the USA (1998-2001). His exhibition at Torre Luzea in Zarauz (1984), with Balerdi and Zumeta, and the "Modernism" collective at the Bonnat Museum in Bayonne (1985) are particularly noteworthy.

A key characteristic of Goenaga’s art is his recurring exploration of ethnographic themes, drawing inspiration from Basque mythology, cave painting, and the landscape. His works are known for their earthy, stony, and dark colors, influenced by the Basque orography and climate, while flashes of vivid red, green, and yellow occasionally surprise the viewer.
